The Nashville Irish Step Dancers (NISD), headed by Mary Moran, TCRG, (Certified Irish Step Dance Teacher) was founded in 1990. NISD was the first school in Middle Tennessee to win awards at both Regional and North American Championships. In the following years NISD has had continued success in these Championships. At the 2008 Southern Regional's NISD won an impressive 17 Top Awards in both Individual and team competition with 11 National Qualifiers and 4 World Qualifiers. In addition to our success at the 2008 North American National Championships we have firmly established NISD as a driving force in the Southern Region.

NISD performs regularly in Middle Tennessee in venues ranging from International Festivals to TV Broadcasts. Our performance troupe has performed at the famous Ryman Auditorium and become a tradition at the The Grand Ole Opry (going on 10 years). NISD has had the honor to perform with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra , Irish fiddle extraordinaire Eileen Ivers and Irish legends and multi-Grammy winners The Chieftains . Our school was privileged to be featured guest on the Chieftains final original cast performance at the Historic Ryman Auditorium. This performance was released on DVD “ Down The Old Plank Road ”, included on this show were country greats Ricky Skaggs, Martina McBride & Allison Krauss to name a few. NISD and Mary Moran have been featured in various print publications including Irish Dancer Magazine and the U.K. Irish Dancing Magazine.

NISD is proud to be the longest established Irish Dance School in Nashville and active members in our community, each year performing , Celtic Rhythms On Fire , an energetic fusion of live Irish dance, music, and song, that has sold-out performances.

“ Celtic Rhythms On Fire is a celebration of the rich and vibrant artistry of Irish dance and music, and, in a larger sense, the fiery spirit of the Irish culture and heritage,” Moran explains.

“The show features not only the more traditional elements – such as the jig, reel and hornpipe, but also explores more progressive styles of Irish dance and music. The collaboration between the dancers, musicians and singers really results in a spirited lively interchange,” Moran says. “And, of course, the audience is a big part of that – we have something for everyone and all age groups. We have our own interpretations of ‘Cotton-Eyed Joe', ‘Riverdance', ‘Lord of the Dance', ‘Gettin' Jiggy With It', and the new kids/teens hit, ‘Nobody's Perfect', our Hannah Montana number.

The popularity of Irish dance has exploded in recent years, with growing numbers of dancers and fans the world over who love the art and sport of the dance.

We welcome dancers in all levels of dance experience ranging in age from toddler to adult, with aspiration ranging from recreation to World Championships.
